What Foods Should You Avoid While Wearing Braces?

As we enter this holiday season, we will likely eat a variety of foods that we are not used to eating at other times of the year. We tend to give ourselves a pass when it comes to food over the holidays.

But if you are wearing braces, there are a variety of things you should and should not do. One thing you should do is to monitor the foods that you are consuming while you are wearing their braces. Some foods can cause more problems for you than others and it is critical that these foods be avoided. If you are consuming foods that are not good for the braces, it can be costly to fix the damaged braces and can be painful for you.

Most foods are ok to eat as long as they are cut into manageable, small pieces that are easy to chew. However, hard or tough foods should be avoided because they could damage the brackets of the braces.

  • Tough foods such as whole apples and bagels
  • Chewy foods such as taffy and caramel – these are especially important to avoid because they can stuck between the braces and will increase the chance of cavities developing

We often hear from people that they did not realize staining would continue to occur until after their braces came off. When brushing, it is important to do so gently to minimize the damage caused to the brackets and wires; start at the top and move downwards.

Braces should be taken seriously. When you consume foods that you shouldn’t, it creates a more painful and unenjoyable experience. If your braces are damaged due to consuming foods that should be avoided, this will lead to another orthodontic appointment and more time in the braces. Take care of your braces so that you achieve the result that you have always wanted.

At Innovative Orthodontic Centers, we have a variety of orthodontic options available to make your experience simple, more controlled and with shorter appointment times.
